This was promised a long while ago.
I originally started this out intending to build an AR pistol with a 7.5" barrel. After some deliberation, I went with a 10.5", 1:7" twist barrel, and will likely eventually apply (grudgingly) for a federal permission slip to turn it into an SBR.
It works just fine in the pistol configuration though, without the stock. Cheekweld is completely reasonable, especially with plates and a plate carrier. So, maybe I won't SBR it. Broken down, it fits well in a normal laptop-style backpack.
I'll only post a picture, as the full review will be one of my submissions for the "III" 527 organization's "SHTF Guns" book. (Does that qualify as a shamless plug?)
Pay no mind to the flashlight location, as it normally lives on the bottom of the free-float handguard. I'm still monkeying with it. As this is a HD weapon, I feel a light is warranted. It's all done except for a sling and optics. I'll run irons until I get the funds for an optic.
Here ya go, and not a word further until the book comes out
Looks sweet!
ReplyDeleteThere was nothing objectionable about either of my recent comments. Am I persona non grata here? Say so, and I won't bother you again.
ReplyDeleteNice.
ReplyDelete...eyes are green again...lol
ReplyDeleteCan't fathom this current craze for carbine based "pistols". A pistol/revolver is for defense. Rifle/carbine for offense. Practical engagement range for a 5.56mm pistol isn't any better than a traditional .45 or 9 mil. And with either the 45 or 9 one has a much heavier bullet than the 5.56mm round. Btw...you planning on carrying this pistol IWB or OWB? :)
ReplyDeleteGreat blog. Enjoy your project.

How good is the Krink on the muzzle work for directing the sound away?

ReplyDeleteHave you ever fired one personally?
I can ring steel with boring regularity with the platform out to 200m.
I believe USSOCOM would disagree with you as well.
I plan on carrying this pistol with a single point sling.
Dude, it's a carbine without a buttstock. Cheekweld is fine without it.
I'd put a 64 grain bonded, a 62 grain SOST, or a 75 grain BTHP moving at 2,000-2,600 fps against any 9mm or .45 bullet anyday.
Pistols cartridges poke holes. Rifle cartridges tear things up.
This is a "pistol" in the ATF's eyes only.

AP....yes I've fired one. That's why I question the validity of such a weapon. To each their own. Glad you enjoy it. But I prefer a SBR with a functioning stock. My sidearm is a .45 cal PISTOL.
ReplyDeleteTake care.

AP, I must say I was pretty iffy on the whole idea until I saw it is basically an SBR without the legal hassles. It looks very useful and pretty to boot. Seems like it would be a rocking house gun.
ReplyDeleteAbout how much did it run you all said and done?

ReplyDeleteIt does have its limitations, but you described it correctly.
I don't know if it's worth $200 and a 6 month wait to SBR it, when the cheek weld works just fine.
It's my home/neighborhood weapon, and for that, it's perfect (to me).
Price? Eek...I pieced it together over time... I'd say it ran me around $800 ballpark, probably a bit more. This is a rough guess, as I am a horrible accountant when it comes to remembering and recording firearms prices... ;-)
I got a list together of generalities I wanted, then started looking for sales. I don't think any of it was bought at regular prices...some of it was bought at darned good sale prices.
Getting everything together was agonizingly slow, to a hot blooded, impatient American like me... ;-)
It can be done a cheaper, if one isn't stuck on a name brand. I wanted this to be Troy and Spike's build as much as possible. I gave up a little toward the end to save money, but I got most of what I wanted.
I'm happy with it. Out to 200 or so meters, it'll do the job, easy.
